The first question for the first team:

She was born into an upper class British family in 1820 in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. She was named after the town where she was born. Although her parents expected her to become a wife and a mother, in 1845 she decided to become a nurse. In 1854 when the Crimean War began, she was working in Harley Street in London. After reading many reports about the poor treatment of sick and injured soldiers, she travelled to Crimea to see for herself and discovered the hospitals were crowded and dirty. While she was working in Crimea she became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” because she would walk around the hospital in the evening carrying a lamp and check on the soldiers. When she returned to England she started a school in 1860 for nurses at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. She wrote her most important book Notes on Nursing. (Florence Nightingale)(слайд6-7)

The first question for the second team:

She was an American nurse, researcher, theorist, and author. She is famous for a definition of nursing: "The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge" (Virginia Henderson)(слайд 8-9)

The second question for the first team:

She was born in the village of Kozitsino near Torzhok (Tver province) in a noble family.  By the time the Crimean War began, she was forty years old. Among the first volunteers, she wished to go to the front immediately. On January 21, 1855, she was among the sisters of the Holy Cross Community and began working in the barracks of the besieged Sevastopol. She has got diligence and courage. After the war she returned to her motherland. In a specially constructed wooden building, she opened a small hospital with eight beds, conducted reception and provided medical care at her own expense and paid maintenance to the doctor. Also she works in the hospital duringThe Russian-Turkish War. (Ekaterina Bakunina)(слайд 10-11)

Thesecondquestionforthesecondteam:

Among the defenders of Sevastopol, she was known as a brave sister of mercy. She was driven by selfless help and selfless service to people. She rightfully takes her place among the world-famous ascetics. So the first mobile dressing station soon appeared in Sevastopol. Her carriage was named "the carriage of grief" by the locals from the Ship's side. Every day, from morning to night, she took out the wounded from the battlefield.Emperor Nicholas I awarded our heroine a gold medal on the Vladimir ribbon with the inscription: "For diligence" and ordered to give 500 rubles in silver. (DashaSevastopolskaya)(слайд 12-13)

Text for the first team (read, translate, find English equivalents for the words).

The history of service to the sick and wounded goes back to the early centuries of Christianity. It is believed that nursing in Russia began in 1803 in the era of Peter The First. At that time, the service of "compassionate widows" was created at the educational homes of St. Petersburg and Moscow. The first manual on patient care in Russia was published in 1822. This manual for the first time gave the basics of deontology, described the requirements for the moral qualities of caring staff. In 1844, the first Holy Trinity Community of Sisters of Mercy in Russia was founded in St. Petersburg. Sisters of mercy were not only cared for, educated, but also taught the basic hygienic rules of patient care, as well as some medical procedures. Widows and girls of 20 — 40 years of age of all classes were accepted into the community. The applicants were given a one-year probation period, then the ceremony of admission to the sisters of mercy took place in a solemn atmosphere after the liturgy in the church. The adopted sister pronounced the oath.

Text for the second team (read, translate, find English equivalents for the words).

Now nurses are professionals in their field. They work with complex medical equipment, perform complex procedures. But it wasn't always like that. Even some 200 years ago, nurses, as such, did not exist. In hospitals, in infirmaries and in so-called homes for the poor, nurses looked after the sick, who not only knew about the treatment, even the human anatomy practically did not know. Nurses help to conduct outpatient admission of patients, they assist in operations, perform a lot of necessary and important work to "put" the patient on his feet. This profession requires humanity, warmth, kindness and great dedication at any time and under any circumstances. According to doctors, up to 80% of all care for patients falls on the shoulders of nurses. All this requires a lot of warmth and love for their sometimes difficult work.
